Comfortable Cilic crushes Bautista Agut to reach quarter-finals

11 July 2017 Sports

Marin Cilic demolished Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 6-2 6-2 at Wimbledon on Monday, doing the damage on distant Court 12 with his pounding serve and thumping forehand.

The 28-year-old seventh seed has reached the quarter-finals this year almost under the radar with straight-set victories over solid opponents Philipp Kohlschreiber, Florian Mayer and Steve Johnson, before downing Bautista Agut, who is ranked a healthy 19th in the world.

Elsewhere, Gilles Muller beat No 4 seed Rafa Nadal 15-13 in a marathon fifth set to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

The 34-year-old from Luxembourg, who beat Britain’s Aljaz Bedene in the third round, fired down 30 aces as he sent the two-time champion packing in a brilliant display of power in just under five hours.

Muller won the first two sets 6-3 6-4 before the Spaniard fought back to take the next two sets 6-3 6-4 to set up a thrilling finale.

Also, Roger Federer secured his passage to the quarter-final stage of Wimbledon with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 6-4 win over Grigor Dimitrov.

In the women’s singles, Johanna Konta became the first British woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals since Jo Durie in 1984 when she beat Caroline Garcia of France 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-4 on Monday.

Konta had previously won only one match in five Wimbledon appearances but now suddenly finds herself with a realistic chance of winning it and becoming the first home champion since Virginia Wade 40 years ago.
